Points to remember

The house you are going to be moving into is not just a "property" it is probably going to be your home for many months, maybe years.

The main points to remember are:-

  • Choose a good standard of property - if the property is not up to a good standard, don't rent it.
  • Establish a good landlord/tenant relationship. There are a lot of good landlords who insist on a good tenant. Make sure you are one of those.
  • Do not allow rent to fall into arrears or cause any anti-social behaviour. Doing this now can follow you around for many years severely restricting your choice of home.
  • When you sign the tenancy it becomes your home and many responsibilities fall on your shoulders. Do not allow anyone else to come into your home and cause any damage or bad behaviour.
  • Remember if you are claiming Housing Benefit you may not get full benefit. Therefore any shortfall in the amount will be have to be by yourself. Make sure you can afford it.

Finally, if there is something you are unsure about - ASK.
